Outside The Fillmore Detroit it was a blustery cold winter night.
Inside it felt more like summer with a sold out crowd there to see one of the first big tours of 2015~ Papa Roach & Seether.
The night began with openers Islander & Kyng.
(Each band hand picked by Papa Roach & Seether, respectively, and each with current hits on SiriusXM's Octane radio station.)
Both bands did a great job warming up the crowd with but one of the early highlights for me had to be hearing Kyng's cover of the Van Halen classic "Hot For Teacher".
Impressive to hear a 3-piece pull it off and definitely got the crowds attention for sure.
The lights go down and Seether's stage is revealed.
An animal shaped skull on the center mic-stand and red stringed lights across the drum riser. Shaun Morgan (vocals, guitar), Dale Stewart (bass, backing vocals) , John Humphrey (drums), and Bryan Wickmann (guitars) take the stage.
The band performed hits such as “Remedy,” “Fake It", "Broken" (originally performed with Evanescence’s Amy Lee), “Rise Above This” and “Words As Weapons.”
Seether always bring an intensity to their live shows. Even if you have seen them before (as I have) they have a way of making their songs/set unique each time. Always giving 110% for the fans.
This was my first time seeing their new guitarist Bryan Wickmann and I must say~ he definitely added to the energy/element of their live show as well.
The theater goes dark again as the clock anxiously approaches 10pm.
A blue light illuminates a 'starry night' backdrop with silhouettes of mountains along the bottom, (à la the cover of Papa Roach’s newest album, “F.E.A.R.” which was released January 27th). Blue & gold stage lights shine down upon the drum set which has 3 large metal 'arms' protruding from it and more lights anchored to them.
The stage is set, instruments tuned, setlists in place.
The audience begins to cheer as Jacoby Shaddix (vocals), Jerry Horton (guitars), Tobin Esperance (bass), and Tony Palermo (drums) take to the stage and kick off their set with the title track from their new album F.E.A.R. (Face Everything And Rise).
Papa Roach took the energy of The Fillmore Detroit to another level which in turn emanated throughout the entire venue.
Vocalist, Jacoby Shaddix, is a pure showman, darting around from one side of the stage to the other, interacting with the crowd at every opportunity.
Using the pedestals towards the front of the stage to get the crowd amped up more and more.
Tony Palermo was solid behind the kit and Jerry Horton and Tobin Esperance worked the stage at times headbanging in sync among a fulgurant display of lights.
Papa Roach's setlist was solid, seemlessly performing their classic hits ("Getting Away With Murder", "Scars", "Forever", "Last Resort") with new tracks from "F.E.A.R."
One moment I thought was pretty cool was during the intro/opening of "Broken Home", the guys infused a bit of hometown boy Eminem's "Lose Yourself".
All in all it was a great night of rock music and Papa Roach and Seether, both 'veterans' in the industry proved that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the rock world.
This is definitely a show worth your hard-earned dollar. If you have not done so already, get your tickets NOW!
