The Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival officially kicked off it's 5th installment last Friday at DTE Energy Music Theater in Clarkston (Detroit), MI. Fans packed in early on a sun-filled afternoon ready for a long day of soaking in the sun and getting to know some of the new bands out there that the rock scene has to offer.

Battle of the Bands winner, The Oath Lies Here, got things underway followed by Canadian rockers Sons of Revelry. FunGoneWrong filled in for Tattered, who could not make the show, which set the stage for 3 Years Hollow and Escape the Fate to cap things off on the side stage. The latter two of the bunch definitely leaving an impression on me and will definitely be checking out more of their music! (Which is what these festivals are all about right?)

Over to the main stage where Michigan natives, Pop Evil, kicked it into high gear with a short but intense 30 minute set and included their hits, "Trenches", "Torn To Pieces" and "Deal With the Devil". I've seen Pop Evil perform a handful of times over the years and somehow this performance seemed to be there most amped up set yet! (Meaning that every member of the band delivered an intense performance. Especially drummer Chachi Riot who was a lot of fun for me to try & capture!) Lead singer, Leigh Kakaty, was also visibly excited to be back playing in front of the 'hometown' crowd and the fans drew off of the bands energy

Next up was Skillet. I have only seen them a couple of times but I think they are a great band to see live. They too put on a high energy set but was mixed with some mild theatrics (some steam jet 'pyro' of sorts would go off at particular points of their set and they had two powered platforms that raised guitarists Korey Cooper and Seth Morrison up a good 20 ft or so into the air) and a pair of string players who opened up/playing throughout their set.

Seether performed a more straight-forward, yet equally as powerful. Their 10 song set included the hits "Rise Above This", "Gasoline", "Fake It" and their new single, "Words As Weapons". Staind drummer Sal Giancarelli actually filled in for John Humphrey, who frontman Shaun Morgan informed the crowd, was away on a family matter.

A white curtain was raised as the crowd anticipated Godsmack to take the stage... Before you knew it, the sun faded beyond the horizon and the house lights dimmed right on schedule. A video montage of some candid/behind the scene moments of headliners, Godsmack, plays as AC/DC's "For Those About To Rock" played in it's entirety. As the song nears end, we see a spotlit silhouette of frontman Sully Erna and as the cannons fire, the curtain drops. From the first note, Godsmack powered their way through a 14-song, 90 minute, pyro-laden set. A set that included a mix of older songs, ("Awake", "Whatever", "I Stand ALone", and "Voodoo" to name a few) and included newer songs (from their new album, "1000hp"): "Generation Day", "Locked and Loaded", "Something Different" and the title track/current single "1000hp".

There was also what I like to call a staple Godsmack moment (between "Voodoo" and "Whatever") where Sully Erna and Shannon Larkin have a drum battle. Finishing with a medley of classic rock hits such as Aerosmith's "Walk This Way", Queen's "We Will Rock You", AC/DC's "Back in Black and more.

Erna addressed the sell out Detroit audience at one point by telling them they were excited to be back and thanked them for their longtime support. He also stated that he thought Detroit was "the ultimate rock city in America". It's that kind of mutual respect a band has for its fans that will keep Godsmack rockin for many more years to come.

Don't miss the Rockstar Energy Drink UPROAR Festival when it comes to your town!
