Metal masters Trivium returned to Royal Oak, MI last Wednesday night. They're currently in the midst of a North American Fall Tour supporting The Sin and the Sentence which is also the last major headlining tour for this album cycle. Roughly eleven months have passed since the last time Trivium performed on this stage, however on this night, they were the headlining act. Accompanying them on the bill were special guests Light the Torch, from Los Angeles, and Avatar, from Gothenburg, Sweden. Each band delivered a night filled with excitement, wonder, moshing, and of course: Metal.

The venue was surprisingly pretty full by the time Light the Torch took the stage. Perhaps folks were eager to escape the brisk October weather, or maybe they knew something I did not. Either way, I was glad to have arrived early enough to catch their set as they provided that shot of adrenaline the crowd needed to set the tone for the night. Light the Torch features Howard Jones (ex Killswitch Engage) on vocals, but they are a solid band all around. Jones and co. are currently out supporting their latest album, Revival, which was released last March on Nuclear Blast Records.

Big band style music played over the load speaker as Avatar's stage was set. A 'marquee' light bearing their name was lit behind the drum riser as the rest of the stage spot lights were being tested. On a personal note, this show would mark my first time actually seeing Avatar play indoors; every other time had been at outdoor festivals. Wow, I was definitely missing out. They are still great, sonically, but having their own the stage & lights certainly added to the experience. Johannes Eckerström is a great front man/ring leader, if you will.. Very charismatic and expressive, as he engaged with the fans in between select songs. The band powered through a variety of tracks including fan favorites such as: "Let It Burn", "Smells Like A Freakshow", "Bloody Angel" and ending with "Hail the Apocolypse" which was met with plenty of hair whipping, guitar solos, fist-pumping and crowd-surfing. There's really no words to describe the intensity of their live show, they really need to be seen to be experienced to the fullest.

After some time to regroup, you could feel the anticipation/excitement building for the nights headliner, Trivium. A giant backdrop was hung that featured artwork from The Sin & the Sentence, somewhat reminiscent of Egyptian style art. Needless to say, the venue was now packed and as soon as the house lights dropped, we could hear the Maiden classic ‘Run To The Hills’ blaring out from the overhead sound system. From the moment they hit the stage Matt Kiichi Heafy, Corey Beaulieu, Paolo Gregoletto and Alex Bent, whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Playing several new songs off of their latest album, including “Betrayer," and “The Wretchedness Inside,” as well as classic favorites like “A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation” which Heafy had everybody on the floor jumping. "Into the Mouth of Hell" and "He Who Spawned the Furies" featured guest performer and guitarist extraordinaire, Jared Dines, of YouTube fame. And a four song encore that included "Strife" and "In Waves."

There's no denying Trivium gave their everything on stage. They do it night in and night out proving why they are still one of the best metal acts around. Heafy is one of my favorite guitarists/vocalists, not just for his great ability vocally, or his talents on the guitar, but also for the respect and control he has over his fans in attendance. The crowd behaved on this night but I have seen past performances where he'll literally stop the show in its tracks to make sure everybody's good and that no one gets hurt. He will frequently address the crowd as 'friends' but being at a Trivium show he makes you feel like family.
