Interview With Michael Miley Of Rival Sons, And Live Review By ~MaggieUk @FullMetalRock

August 7, 2015

Plug, Sheffield, UK

Fans started arriving at Plug in Sheffield in the early afternoon with their Rival Sons t-shirts, pic necklaces, cds and artwork, all hoping for more than just a glimpse of the band before the gig. Never ones to disappoint, one by one, they made appearances and although short on time, spoke to each and every fan. Those wanting to get up front knew to arrive early, and it didn't take long for the line to go around the block. At 6:00 staff were checking that everyone in line had a ticket as only 5 remained. No surprise for a band that somehow manages to give so much of themselves at each and every gig, even when on a Million Mile Road Tour.

The Graveltones, a U.K. based Australian duo, opened the evening with a blistering set, including songs from their new album, “Love Lies Dying” Not content with "warming up" the crowd, Jimmy O and Mikey Sorbello played their set with the fiercest intensity, sending the already packed venue into inferno level temperatures. Mikey was an absolute monster on the drums, and Jimmy poured out every ounce of adrenaline he had with every note, at times bewildering people with his force. The crowd got so into their set that there wasn't a dry shirt in the house; although the lack of adequate ventilation in Plug surely contributed.

When the theme from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" started to play (the trademark entrance tune for the Sons), the crowd erupted and didn't stop for the whole set. ‘Electric Man’, one of six songs played from “Great Western Valkyrie”, was the fuse that sparked what turned out to be one hell of a night. Those first six notes were instantly recognizable and had everyone screaming in the filled to capacity room. The first three songs mirrored the first three tracks of the new album, and the fans showed the band just how well they knew the songs by singing and dancing along to every note.

In an attempt to please everyone, Rival Sons played songs from all of their releases; ‘Tell Me Something’ from their debut album “Before The Fire”, to ‘Face of Light’, a soulful ballad that Jay Buchanan delivered with passion and conviction. Jay managed to not only tell a story when he sang, but to use ever fiber of his being to express the emotion of each song. You lived each song with him. ‘Torture', from the Rival Sons EP, has made regular appearances on the band's set lists over the years, and is just as popular now as it was when it was their first UK single back in 2011. The crowd participation was so intense it had a visible impact on the band.

The amount of energy each of the band members put into each song was incredible, and the fans fed off it and gave that energy back tenfold. Having seen Rival Sons four times in the past year, they amazed me at how they can continue to ramp up their performances each and every time. The addition of touring keyboardist Todd Ögren-Brooks has completed the sound that the band worked so hard to achieve in the studio. With the groove of David Beste on bass and the effervescent personality of Michael Miley on drums, the rhythm section drove each song with a force felt from your feet to your fingers.

The guitar work of Scott Holiday, something that should be seen to be really appreciated, was a performance like no other. This guys exudes cool and style in the way most of us just breath, with every strum of his stunning guitars, and when he played his guitar solos all eyes were fixed on him. Rival Sons delivered on all fronts, with a powerful, spell-binding performance that leaves you convinced this is a band you will see again and again.
