The Rock & Roll Express Tour featuring 3 Doors Down, Collective Soul & Soul Asylum rolled through Sterling Heights, MI this past Tuesday night. A beautiful 82* summer evening at an outdoor music venue with the soundtrack of some of rocks biggest hits in the past 20 years.. what more could you ask for? Ok, a drink in hand too. Done.

As I made my way to the photo pit, I was pleased to find I hadn't missed the opener, Soul Asylum. They got things rollin with a modest seven-song setlist that included their hits "Just Like Anyone", "Black Gold" and "Runaway Train" which garnered the most crowd participation of the bands set.

Now that the blood was flowin a little bit, the growing crowd was more than eager for the next band to start. Collective Soul took to the stage ready to rock launching into their set with a couple of new tunes, "Now's the Time" and "Over Me". Both were well received by the crowd and flowed seamlessly with their other classic tunes like "Gel", "December" and "Shine, which vocalist Ed Roland led the crowd in singing along from behind a piano. When he wasn't singing or playing the piano, the charismatic Roland could be found dancing and dodging his way around the mic stand as if it was something out of the movie 'Fantasia'. Collective Soul are one of those bands that bring everything they have and put it into their live performance. And on this night, all cylinders were firing and it was evident the band was in their element, enjoying their time playing together for the fans.

The sun has now set, seemingly right on cue, for Mississippi's own 3 Doors Down who were greeted to the stage with a thunderous applause from the now capacity crowd. The stage lights/backdrop were set to resemble an oncoming train while LCD panels and multi leveled tiers carved their way around the drum riser. 3DD set kicked off with “Duck and Run” (from their debut release, Better Life). At one point during this song guitarists, Chris and Chet, met center stage to exchange riffs.

Throughout the night fans could be spotted singing along and cheering through a multitude of hits that spanned 3 Doors Down's career. Songs like “Let Me Go,” “Away From the Sun", “Be Like That" and the one that started it all, "Kryptonite". The American flag was proudly displayed stage right with the bands love for their country further evident in guitarist Chris Henderson's guitar strap and footwear both of which donned the stars and stripes.

After a brief departure from the stage, Brad Arnold and company returned to big cheers and delve into a heavy duty two song encore: “Here Without You” and "When I'm Gone". These fan favorites were a great ending to an awesome night of rock n’ roll.

Beyond all of the trends, or the labels, that come and go in the music scene, one thing stands out to me.. these bands have remained true to their sound and style and are still rocking after all of these years. And now to a new generation of music fans. There are plenty more US dates left to see these bands live before this tour wraps up.
